The White House has tapped Howard A. Schmidt, president and CEO of the Information Security Forum and president of the Information Systems Security Association to coordinate the development of a national IT security defense strategy,
Schmidt, pictured, who held top-level computer security posts in the public and private sectors, including Microsoft, eBay, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Air Force, ranks as one of the most respected IT security officials in the world. As White House cybersecurity czar, Schmidt will be charged with setting computer security policy and
providing budget guidance across the government. Among his top
challenges will be tapping the cyberdefense capabilities at the
National Security Agency while ensuring adequate privacy protections
for activities in the civilian sector, the Wall Street Journal reports. He will report to President Barack Obama through the chief of counterterrorism on the National Security Council, John Brennan, who headed the search committee, according to the Atlantic's Politics blog. Schmidt's appointment caps a 10-month search.
